The natural ingredients to help you look youthful may be as close as your pantry.
Homemade egg white masks are cheap, fun, and work brilliantly well.
Egg white is a common ingredient I use in face masks. Although there is no definitive scientific evidence demonstrating the specific benefits of egg white on the skin, I still love the way they make my skin feel.
Table of Contents
Why are egg whites so good for your skin?
Even the products we buy to improve our skin may actually cause problems (downloads a PDF). So even the most pampered skin can start showing signs of aging and fatigue.
So what can be done to look your best?
Well, after loads of research and skin trials at home I think I have found an answer…
Egg white.Β
Yep, I believe that the humble egg helps with youthful looks!
But what is it about this ingredient that makes it so good?
Well, to understand that you need to learn what egg white is made of.
Wikipedia says “Egg white consists primarily of about 90% water into which about 10% proteinsΒ (includingΒ albumins,Β mucoproteins, andΒ globulins) are dissolved. Unlike the egg yolk, which is high inΒ lipidsΒ (fats), egg white contains almost no fat, andΒ carbohydrate content is less than 1%. Egg whites contain about 56% of the protein in the egg.”
In addition, studies show that eggs have among the highest protein efficiency ratio‘s recorded in any food source.
Specifically, it is the proteins within eggs that makes them such a powerful ingredient for DIY masks.
The consistency of the egg white also helps it bind ingredients together so when you create a homemade mask adding an egg helps hold everything together and make it easy to apply it to your face.
As the American Egg Board says “The chemistry of egg protein coagulation explains how egg products assist with binding ingredients in multi-component prepared food system, preventing products from crumbling, losing their shape or falling apart”.
One thing worth remembering when using eggs as an ingredient in a DIY mask is that they are used raw. Raw eggs may contain salmonella so thereβs a risk of salmonellosis when you ingest raw eggs so please be careful and don’t eat them!
Is it safe to use egg whites on your face?
For the majority of the population, the use of egg white on your face is completely safe. However, this does not mean it is without risk.
Some people do suffer from egg hypersensitivity or have an egg allergy so it’s always best to check.
Do a patch test on your skin to make sure you haven’t developed an allergy. If you feel any of the following symptoms you should avoid using an egg white mask:
- Burning sensations
- Slight irritation
- Swelling
- Redness
Specifically, some of the dangers you should be careful about include:
- Allergic reaction. If you have an allergy to eating eggs it is unwise to apply them to your skin.
- Egg intolerance or sensitivity. If you apply an egg face mask then there is a chance you may swallow some of it causing a tummy ache, or worse.
- Salmonella. There is a danger that raw eggs may contain a bacteria called salmonella which can cause serious illness.
Look youthful with DIY egg white face mask recipes
Interestingly, I have learned that egg proteins may potentially contribute to maintaining the elasticity of the skin. An egg contains about 69 different proteins, which have the magical power of reducing fine lines and temporary relief for the deep ones.
Egg whites are high in collagen and vitamin A (which is essential in the development of products that are able to treat scars or burns).
This means a remedy that includes egg whites will help you get rid of problems like:
- rosacea
- large pores
- acne
- other rashes.
Just remember to mix your egg white really well each time you use it (by mixing it you will obtain a foamy egg white look).
So now you know the miracle ingredient, the next question is how to use them in a way that will benefit you and your skin care regime.

Peaches are among my favorite fruits to eat because of their sweet juicy taste and lovely smell.Β They are also a great source of vitamins and minerals with important therapeutic properties and they can moisturize the body (87% of peaches content is water).
Sour cream, our other ingredient, contains lactic acid, which helps the skin retain moisture. This skin-enhancing ingredient can be also a natural scrub and it boosts the production of collagen.
There are a lot of beauty and skincare products on the market which contain lactic acid such as moisturizers, shampoos, and soaps. However, you can also get the benefits of this wonderful ingredient by using it in your own DIY treatments.

I live in LA and the air quality is so terrible, my sensitive skin always breaks out when I’m here. Nothing has fixed it, not even proactive. This mask is the only thing that works π
Georgiana Coslenco
Hey LMY,
I like the look of LA and I canβt wait to visit some day.
It makes me so happy to know that this recipe works for you.
Yet here is a healthy habit that can also help prevent acne:
A good way to prevent acne is to wash your face more often using a cleansing gel thatβs appropriate for your type of skin.
An effective rule is to wash your face 2 times a day, once in the morning and once in the evening.
If you practice sports, you may or may not have a greasy face after you finished your training. Either way, do not wait until you get home to wash the sweat off as it will dry on your face causing pores to block and lead to spots.
Similarly, if you travel by public transport and you are exposed to germs, pollution, dirt and warm or moist air, try to wash your face during the day about 3 to 4 times.
However:
Although oily skin can often be a burden because this skin has the tendency to develop spots, there is still some good news hidden in all this.
I know that it doesnβt seem to be any positive with an oily/acne skin, BUT the excess oil keeps your skin elastic and that means, worries about wrinkles will occur much later than your friends with dry skin.
I hope these tips help too and thank you for your appreciation and nice comment. π

I have tried egg white on face tonight,i have fine laughter lines & blotchy skin,it feels,I have a little scar on chin, will this help to fade it?
Adryn
I LOVE this! I’ve been breaking out lately and today I had a look in the over head mirror in my car…. I call it The Truth mirror ’cause you can see EVERYTHING w/o flattering light or anything special LOLOL. How often should I use this mask?
Georgiana Coslenco
Hi Adryn,
I like your method with the truth mirror π
I think that if this face mask works for you, I would say it needs to be applied up to 3 times/week.
You can apply this less often when you will see improvements in your skin. So basically you will know when it will be the time to just apply this face mask once a week or even once at 2 weeks. Until then I would apply it 3 times/week.
Good luck.
Georgiana Coslenco
Hi Dawn,
Egg white will help your skin look better from several points of view that are mentioned in the article above.
However, in time it will improve the look of your complexion. You just need to apply the face mask consistently as the results will only be achieved with the passing of time.
Egg white helps with the healing of minor scars that are not deep.
Any other deep scars or infections you should see a dermatologist before any treatment.
I would say that you would still need to choose an egg white based face mask depending on your skin type. Once you decided which mixture of ingredients added to your egg white face mask works for your skin, I would do this:
1. prepare your egg white by putting it in a bowl and beat it until foamy
2 the next stage is to add a bit of honey (as honey is great for any type of skin)
3. apply some of the egg white with honey on your scar
4. the next step is to proceed adding the rest of the ingredients you chose to be added to the egg white face mask based on your type of skin.
5. apply the face mask on the rest of your face.
I suggested you should also apply some honey, as this ingredient works magic in any situation and type of skin. Most of all it also helps a lot with acne scars.
In case you have an allergy to honey, then don’t use it and just apply the egg white on your scar.
I recommend you apply egg white to your scar twice a week.
Let me know how this works for you.
Good luck!
Hannah

If I’m allergic to lemons do you think i will flar up using this mask?
Natalie Shriber
Thanks for the mask recipe! My face feels fresh and a bit firmer. I was wondering i) how often can/should i do this and ii) if I have excess face mask can i keep it in the refrigerator and if so how long will it keep good…? Thanks!
nhtn91
Hi,
Can i store the compound after mixing it? How long would it last?
Thanks
Georgiana Coslenco
Hi Mary,
If you are allergic to lemons, I wouldn’t advise you using them.
However, you could replace the lemons from this mask with the juice from a fresh orange or some honey π
Don’t use ingredients that you are allergic to.
Georgiana Coslenco
Hi Natalie,
I am happy it helped!
Although I wouldn’t keep the leftovers as the properties of the ingredient change..
I know it feels like a waste when you are throwing the rest of the mask away..(if you still have some leftovers) but it is the safest way to go for your skin..instead of risking to get an irritated complexion after using the older ingredient..
It sometimes happens to me as well and I feel sorry about that every time. π
You could maybe try spreading it more on your cleavage too (wear something appropriate at the time though to avoid stains and a mess)-I always do. π
The benefits of the egg white are so great that it is worth the hassle with the smell or the time it takes.. π
Georgiana Coslenco

I have combination skin it looks very dull and life less i have some pimples on my cheeks please help me making a pack that is good for me .i am 32 years old lady
Georgiana Coslenco
Hi Manvi,
You could try this face mask: https://georgianac.com/face-mask/by-problem/acne/homemade-oatmeal-face-mask-for-acne/
And don’t forget about having a proper skin cleansing routine. No matter how tired you feel before going to bed, ALWAYS remove your make-up or if you don’t wear any make-up ALWAYS cleanse properly your complexion.
All these good habits go hand in hand with acne treatments. So you will get better results in time.
Good luck. π
Kassandra P. Tarin

Thank you so much for the cost effective remedies. I have bad acne and I can’t wait to start using these masks
hanny
hi miss , can you suggest me anything about face mask .. i have sunburn .. so what can i do ?
Georgiana Coslenco
Hi Hanny,
There are several natural remedies that work wonders for treating sunburn:
1. Vinegar is the first option I recommend. Use it with confidence as it is so effective! (Apple vinegar or vine vinegar, they are both great and will have the same effect for this).
Even if it has an unpleasant odor, vinegar can be used in several ways : compresses , spray or bath .
I would recommend you a compress (I used to use it like that whenever I would get a sunburn).
So here is how you prepare it:
Put in a large bowl some warm water and then add vinegar (two parts water to one part vinegar). So basically the amount of water used for this has to be double than the amount of vinegar used. I hope this makes sense π
Soak in this mixture (the water with the vinegar) a soft cotton cloth, wring it of excess water and vinegar and apply it on the affected skin area . Occasionally Repeat soaking the cloth into the mixture.. until you feel the warmth from the sunburns, starting to come out from your skin .. This process will take not only the heat from your skin but also the pain. You’ll see what I mean. π
2. Tomatoes are another way of treating sunburns.
Tomatoes contain lycopene, an antioxidant that works effectively in curing sunburn, but also helps protect against them.
Slice some ??tomatoes and gently massage your skin on the affected areas.
Another way is to mash the tomatoes until you get the consistency of a paste and apply that on your skin. Although do this in a safe are where you wont stain your carpets, floor..or your surroundings with the tomato juice π
The tomato juice has to be left on your skin until it dries. Gently rinse it off with warm water (don’t rub your skin at all, as you don’t want to irritate your skin even further.. so if you use a towel, just pat yourself dry).
3. Plain Yogurt
Apply yogurt and let it on your skin for about 20 minutes, then rinse it off with warm water.
I hope you feel better soon! Let me know how this worked for you.
Georgiana Coslenco
Hi Mandlovu,
The face or hair masks I post on my blog they are a selection of recipes that I know are efficient and work.
However, if your acne is really bad, you might want to also see a skin doctor. Sometimes, it is best to know if its anything else that we need to do. There are cases in which the acne needs to be treated starting from the interior of our bodies. Our diet and lifestyle have also a great impact on our skin and hair or nails. So only you can really know if a visit to the doctor might be necessary.
Good health and good luck. Let me know how you get on!
Atiqah
Hi Georgiana,

Its works good realy I tried <3 it π
SASSY
Can’t wait to try this! Can I use lime instead of lemons?
Georgiana Coslenco
Hi Sassy,
Lemons and limes are both in the citrus family, so their juices have many of the same properties.
They both have strong flavors of citric acid, but their tastes do not match and cannot typically be substituted for each other.
Limes tend to produce less juice per fruit than lemons and they have a higher natural sugar content, as well as a higher percentage of citric acid.
The right amount of citric acid can improve the condition of an oily or acne skin. However you should half the amounts of citric acids used, if you are going to use lime juice. In this particular face mask, I would recommend to just use the juice of 1/2 a lime, even though you might think that limes are smaller than lemons and it would make up for the same amount of lemon juice. Stick with half as the citric acid in limes are in a higher percentage..
Keep in mind that side effects of citric acid use on the skin include slight burning, tingling, and temporary redness. It is important to test all homemade beauty products on a small patch of skin several hours before using the product on your face. The underside of your forearm is an appropriate spot.
Good luck π
Edz
Is it okay to apply this on your face overnight?? Thanks

Shi Lucy
I really love this new mask! But can the egg whites be stored in a refrigerator rather than be used fresh because I don’t want to waste the egg after one use
Rochelle Ann Cultivo
Hi I would like to hear your suggestion about using a lemon juice and egg white. I wanted to know also if it will removes the redness of the acne mark. And what would be the best product after applying this.?
Kaye Cueto
We have a lot of excess egg white. (From making pudding) Can it stay for days in the fridge? Or should i use it all today?
georgicoslenco
Hi sowmya.r,
I like your idea with wrapping the tissue on, i might try that as well π
To answer your question, extra virgin olive oil and pure coconut oil are both very effective in treating an oily or acne skin. It even helps with acne scars.
I also have some scars left by acne so I apply pure coconut oil on my face (all you need is a tiny bit). I must admit I made a habit out of applying coconut oil more than olive oil – maybe its because it comes more handy as I keep some in the bathroom.. :p
So the nutritive elements found in both pure coconut oil and extra virgin olive oil help with regenerating the skin tissue and rapid regeneration of skin cells.
Egg white is great to reduce excess sebum in your skin by shrinking the size of your pores.
I hope this helps. π
georgicoslenco
Hi faye,
Thank you for your message.
Natural treatments are beneficial for your skin so you can do no harm by alternating these ingredients (egg white and/or egg yolk).
Just try to mix them with other ingredients that are suitable for your skin type.
If you are not sure about your skin type, this might help: https://georgianac.com/homemade-beauty-treatments/skin-types-what-kind-do-i-have/
From what you described, I think this face mask applied regularly, can do wonders:
https://georgianac.com/face-mask/egg-white-face-mask-for-radiant-skin/
By reading through on that page above, you might get inspired to try mixing other ingredients with egg white or egg yolk.
I always think though that is best to prevent anything by regularly taking care of ourselves.
Now I know that are plenty of things that can often get in the way (the lack of time or problems), but just try to find a few minutes for yourself and your skin then will be happy and you will feel better in your own body.
However improvements can be seen if you make sure you nourish your skin properly with what it needs.
Good luck! π
georgicoslenco
Hi Christina,
I must say that I have always used fresh egg white, immediately after cracking the egg.
I don’t really know how long it would last but I just feel that somehow the properties in the egg white or egg yolk would change if kept for even a day.
However if you decide to still keep it, I wouldn’t leave that in the fridge for more than a day.. π
Also I would recommend using fresh juice squeezed from a real lemon as you wouldn’t get the benefits from using juice from a bottle.
I also get lazy sometimes and use lemon juice from a bottle but only when I cook..never in face masks.
The whole idea when using a natural home made face mask is to use natural fresh ingredients.
Hope this helps. π

Hi nikki,
Egg based face masks do give our skin great benefits, especially used on a regular basis.
The egg is a good source of B vitamins (B2, B12, B5), and vitamin D, and an important source of vitamin A.
These are information that I found over time through my research. There are a great number of articles out there and they inevitably contradict sometimes, as ones view doesn’t always match another s.
The essential thing that everyone seems to agree on is that eggs have great benefits if also used in natural face masks.

Hi Shi Lucy,
Thank you for your message.
I never tried storing it. Each time I was left with some, I would make another mask. For example if I just use the egg white for a face mask, instead of throwing the egg yolk away, I would just make a hair mask. π
Someone else asked me about storing them ..I don’t really know what to say as I never did that. But the way I see it is that by storing them, the properties of ingredients can change and you don’t get the same benefits when you use them in a mask..
Maybe you should try storing them in the refrigerator instead of the fridge..I suppose it might work better.
But I would recommend choosing a natural way to defrost – and by that I mean to just wait around for the egg white to naturally defrost without placing it in the microwave.. π
Hope this helps.

Hi Kaye,
You made me crave some pudding. :))
I would say that you shouldn’t store it as the properties might change. I never tried storing it, so I couldn’t really say how much of the benefits you would still get if its not fresh.
I hope you used it all that day :p

Egg white based face masks are great for reducing excess sebum in your skin as it shrinks the size of your pores so it will give your skin a firmer and more even look by greatly reducing larger pores.
By repeating this face mask every now and then the appearance of your skin will improve.
I am not sure if it will also take the redness away, but your skin will visibly be improved if you constantly apply egg white based face masks.
I also have acne scars, though I don’t have the redness so I couldn’t exactly say that from experience.
What I can say though, is that my skin looks better each time after treating myself to an egg white based face mask. And I don’t know if I am now used with my acne scars or if they seem more faded..as their color is more like the rest of my face so I can barely notice them these days.
I always apply a moisturizer for dry skin (as this is my type of skin at the moment).
So after each face mask you should apply a suitable moisturizer for your type of skin.
Don’t forget to cleanse your face every morning and every night before bed and moisturize with a proper moisturizer suitable for your skin type.
All these steps pave the way to a better and more beautiful complexion.
Don’t forget that no one has perfect skin. And what we see on the covers of the magazines is mostly Photoshop! This thought has helped me accept my skin and look at the beautiful side of my skin.
Natural remedies do help to prevent or maintain a beautiful skin but sometimes we have to also see a doctor if in case we are dealing with a type of acne or problem that can be only treated from the inside out.
The only treatments that can really show you a fast result with acne scars is laser treatments or other expensive treatments..but all these under the surveillance of a doctor or prescribed by a doctor.
Deep acne scars for example wont disappear with natural remedies, as these work better (over time) with mild scars.
Hope this helps and good luck.
Keep me posted. π

Thanks so much! I have a weird problem with my nose – it is so sensitive, always red, dry and peeling! The rest of my skin is fine, but my nose! I am going now to try the egg white and milk ( I dont have any carrots, I will put them in next time.) But this will at least be something that might soothe the funky, fussy nose skin.
Great blog, I am enjoying reading the other articles, and will be back!

In the 1st recipe you say egg YOLK for all of your OTHER Egg masks. But if you go back and click on each recipe individually, it says egg WHITE. Which is accurate?
